Here are some things to keep in mind, particularly if you are buying an expensive gemstone ring:

Don't base a buying decision on the opinion of an unknown lab, grader or appraiser. And do not pay extra for a certificate from one of these.

Before you buy, read the return policy and other terms of sale. If you don't like the terms, don't bother with reading the advertisement or listing.
If you do make a purchase, comply with all of the terms the seller has stated (e.g. return policy, appraisals).

If you are going to have your jewelry appraised (always recommended for valuable jewelry) and are going to make your purchasing decision based on the results of the appraisal (recommended), make sure that your appraiser conforms to the seller's specified terms and conditions and that you meet all deadlines stated by the seller. Then choose an appraiser - don't use one recommended by the seller in order to avoid a conflict of interest. Instead, check with friends or family or find one locally.

View all documents provided by the seller with a healthy dose of skepticism (especially if they contain information that you know is untrue, such as an appraisal that lists a "value" that is much more than the asking price. Be careful as well with credible documents (e.g. GIA grading report or an appraisal from a known and trusted appraiser) since these do not always provide the whole story and because they represent one opinion.
